Running X ads for Underway
filmed 8 October 2026 · 4:40
I went through the X ads I'm running for Underway, where the current offer is join for free and get free episodes, and I think that might be the worst decision I've made. The video campaign did around 105,000 impressions with about $500 spent and 198 clicks at roughly $2.50 a click, but free signups bring in people with no skin in the game. The plan now is to build an audience from everyone who watches the video, then retarget them two ways: one asking for the email, one sending them straight to buy. Next I'll walk through the current flow from seeing the ad to using the app as a free member.

All right. All right, guys. Um, okay. Running ads to the least fictionous way, AKA join for free and get free episodes, I think might be the worst decision ever. But I'm trying to find a silver lining, and I, I, I, I think the silver lining is, look, it's making me improve the experience of the app. It's making me simplify things and create like a, an onboarding experience that just is like, boom, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know? But here's the reality, like this is just facts, and I f- I, I, I thought this late last night when I was going to sleep, like the type... Th- this... I know this 'cause I do sales and marketing in my, in my other work, but like the type of people who are coming through who see your ad and wanna use it, and want to use it for free with no commitment and, and skin in the game, are, I would say, generally not the type of people who I envisage using my app day to day. Um, it's not that I'm trying to say, "Oh, I only want rich people with money," which I, I do, but more so that like if it's just for free, not that this won't work, and it might for some people, and my brain goes off in all these different tangents, I'm trying to keep on point here. But when you see an ad, you're like, "Okay, that work, that works." And I know this 'cause I've done this myself a heap, a number of times. See an ad, okay, that cool. Uh, yeah, I'll leave my email. Loads up. Something's a bit off. I don't know. I'm off, gone. See ya. And I'm, I'm experiencing that and, and the reality is I'm paying for that And I weighed up in my mind yesterday. Okay, imagine you get 300 signups from free. The conversion or cost to actually acquire the customer there might still be a lot of money because if you get 200 and only five of them convert to being a paid customer, it's not great, is it? Whereas if you go the direct route, AKA don't push them towards free, just do an ad towards paying, buy it now. You, you might pay more to acquire that customer, right? But it might actually be cheaper than the other one because you convert more of them. So anyway, that's a test that I'm just going to start to make. So I'm running X ads now. Do you know what? Do you know what, guys? Like, let's... I'll show you it. Let's go through the X ads. Sorry. Can you see my screen, guys? I'll just refresh this 'cause that was last night. So we've got campaigns. Okay, so 105,000 impressions yesterday. We spent $500, guys. Oh, we spent 500 overall. Um, can you see? It's like I'm, I'm asking you as if you're gonna reply to me, but like 177,000 impressions, $2.07, uh, whatever, um, 198 clicks. This is just a video campaign. This is just getting people to watch a video and then creating like a audience from people who've watched it. You obviously put the link there, so people still have that option to click- through and obviously I've got out of all those, you've got 200 people who have clicked through. $2.50 per click. You know, not bad at all really. So I think what, what I was trying to say here, guys, let me just stop sharing, is I'm gonna u- run this test. So the people I'm creating a audience for now on X are gonna build up a massive pool of people who watch the video. Then I'm gonna just retarget them with like two things. Number one, leave your lead, your email and I'll kind of email market them. And number two is, um, buy. Buy, bitch. Just send them straight to the pricing page or, or to a specific landing page that gives like a video sales letter. Buy. Just buy it. And I think one of the things that people... It's so weird that it makes you a bit nervous to try it, but you never know. This is a, a fact. You never know until you ask. Like I bet there's so many apps and, and bits of software and companies out there that people that have failed because going to sell and just, just selling into the world, just going, "Hey, buy my stuff. This is reasons, these are the reasons why you should buy." It's kind of daunting for a lot of people, even sat behind a computer. But the fact is, what I'm doing right now is asking people to use my app, not buy, and it's a long way around just asking to buy it and it's good enough. It's, it's fucking awesome to be honest. So I'm gonna start peop- asking people, "Buy it." Okay, that's the episode over and out, guys. So tomorrow or maybe later today, I'm gonna show you the flow from when you see, uh, the, the current flow of when people see an ad through to using it as a free member and we'll go through it and we'll see what we think
Made with underway. It reads the founder’s day, asks them about it out loud, and turns the answers into episodes like this one.
