The in-app browser signup bug
filmed 4 October 2026 · 4:17
I ran ads on Facebook and Instagram and got twelve signups, but only three or four people ever made it through the sign-in link. Claude Code showed me why: people tapped the ad inside Facebook's own in-app browser, then opened the code in Gmail, which launched Safari, and the login couldn't match the two up. The link now works in any browser, there's a note about the spam and promotions tab, a send it again button, an email and phone notification for every signup, and an admin page showing where people get stuck. I also made a post in the build in public subreddit today: three upvotes, 100 views and a couple of comments.

I freaking love bats. Anyway, guys, um, so we got signups. Although some of them failed, so like, you know, these are just the things we have to go through. But like, guys, you know what's so funny? I started running ads, right? I said on the last episode. If you're keeping up with it, you'd have seen. So we ran ads and we got leads. We got people coming through and signing up. So I'm like, "Let's go!" And then it's like, I let it go for a bit, and then we got like 12 signups. I'm like, "Okay, cool. Let's, let's look into it, see what's going on." And it was like none, I think none of them had like opened the link, or one of them had or something, or three, something, something small out of the 12. And it's like, okay, there's issues here. And looking into it, 'cause, 'cause the ad comes up on Facebook or Instagram, right? And so if you click on it, it comes up with a in-app browser within Instagram or Meta or whatever. I don't really use Meta, so I wouldn't know. But anyway, so it's an in-app browser comes up. So then if you... What happens is you put your email, you get a code. The code then gets sent to your normal email. So you kind of come out of that browser and get your code, and you click that email in, click the link in the email with the code and it takes you through. But because it was in a different browser, I know this is super boring, but 'cause it was in a different browser, it, the code wasn't working. Can you believe it? So that's just completely waste of money. I think three people worked it out, which is not good because what you ha- you have to make things incredibly simple for people. So we fixed that, right? Um, I've got Claude open here actually, see if it's got, um What did it say here, gullies? Um, why most people never got in. The sign-in link only worked in the same browser, as I said. Someone who taps your ad signs up inside Facebook's own built-in browser, then opens the Gmail. The link opens Safari, login system can't match it up. Like, that's just one of those things that you just wouldn't think about, and now, like, I am actually so happy with the fact we've got Claude Code and things like that, 'cause you can just find the issue. Whereas if we d- if I didn't have this, like, I would just assume people are linking, like, it's not working. Like, I don't know what I'd do. Um, so what we changed is the link now works in any browser. You get a code in the same email without leaving the sign-up page, whatever that means. We've added a spam and promotions tab note to say, "Hey, you know, it could go to your spam, so make sure you check." Um, there's a send it again button. Um, I now get an email and a phone notification for every sign-up, right? Obviously, that's good because I'm just gonna reach out to these people personally and just be like, "Hey, like, listen, if you need any direction, I'm here." Admin Growth Page, so I get an admin page now showing where people are kind of getting stuck. Like, how cool is that? Um, so that's working on things now, guys. We also did a Reddit post today. I can show you that. Jason The Wall. Look, I've got that stuck in my head. Um, so like we did this, and we made a post in build in public. Like, it's probably just, I don't know, it matches up well, right? And it's a pub- like who's in there? 41,000 weekly visitors, 3.4 thousand weekly contributions So I made a post in here, didn't add an image I should have, but like let's refresh. It's been upvoted three times, 100 views, like not bad. We've got a couple of comments. So little, you know, we take each step at a time. Um, but I did say, and I did see... Where is it? Anyway, I'll do it on another episode, but I think it did give me a breakdown on four of the 12 signups so far have really used their link. Um, so we'll look into that and then see how far they get and where they get stuck. But this is all part of it, part of building and like, it just, it feels good. Like there's no money being made, but we've got customers. We've got people who have seen the ad, who land on the landing page are like, "Yeah, that sounds good," and they're leaving their email and signing up. So we're making some progress here and it feels, it feels good. Jason Derulo
