the month in one film

why a month, and why a film
a daily episode is the record. nobody new is going to watch forty of them to find out what you are building.
the weekly round-up already cuts a week into one long piece, in order. that is still there, and it is still the record of the week.
the month in one film is a different thing. it is the one you post. short, fast, and built like a trailer, except that everything in it happened and it happened in that order.
it came from a film cut by hand from the first forty-eight episodes of building underway, the series documenting underway itself. that film did more in two minutes than anything generated for the launch. so now every founder gets one, every month, without anyone cutting it by hand.
how it chooses what goes in
first it reads what every episode of the month was about: its name, the line on its card, and its description, all written from your own words.
then it picks ten to fourteen of them that tell the month as a story. where the month started. the days that went wrong: what broke, what was rejected, what went quiet. the moment that was funny, or the doubt you said out loud. what worked, and what changed because of it. where it stands now.
the hard days are there on purpose. a month with no setbacks in it reads as an advert, and nobody believes an advert.
from each of those episodes it keeps one moment, a sentence or two that make sense to someone who never saw the episode. it chooses the line where something specific happened or was felt, not a description of the product. and it never moves a line out of order.
what it looks like
it opens on a card with the month and a name for it. september's for building underway was called twenty-four builds, three failures, no customers.
every moment carries the episode it came from and the date, small, in the corner. a podcast moment has no picture, so it is drawn as a card with your line on it and your voice under it.
it closes on every episode of the month filling the frame, one still of each, in order, and then a card that says every moment in the film was recorded in underway.
the music sits low under your voice, drops further whenever you speak, and lifts for the ending. it starts with a track called inspired. change it or take it out on the music tab, like any round-up.

the vault offers the month you are in, so far. press make it so far and it cuts the month to date. the whole month is still made on the first.
a month that is over and has no film yet says make the film. a month needs four or more episodes to make one; fewer is a round-up, not a story.
what it will not do
it will not reorder anything to make a better opening. it will not add a word you did not say. it will not use footage that is not yours, and it will not generate a picture of anything.
the order is the story. that is the whole idea of a diary, and it is what makes a month of it worth watching.
who gets the month in one film?
series and every plan above it: stealth launch, founder's record and company record. it is made on the first of the month for anyone who filmed four or more episodes the month before.
can i change what is in it?
yes. it opens on its own page like any round-up. strike a line to take it out, put it back, change the music, or make the film again.
does it replace the weekly round-up?
no. the week in one cut is still made every sunday. the month in one film is the short one you post.
where does it go?
into your vault, as a tile named for its month. it only goes on your page or anywhere else when you send it.
