Switching Underway ads from free signups to paid
filmed 10 October 2026 · 7:43
I talked through switching Underway's ads from sending people to a free signup toward a paid landing page instead. I woke up asking whether I'm failing at this and whether I should have paying clients by now, with ads running on X and Meta and no customers. On Thursday I asked Garrett at Graft, who runs the agentic Facebook ads, about sending paid traffic to a page that converts people to a paid account, because I'd rather have one paying client than 30 people joining for free and dropping out. The landing page is built, with a founding offer at $79 and the $29 membership.

Guys, gonna be honest with you. I mean, I've had these days, your wobble days, but like I woke up today, I go to bed thinking about it all the time, like, "What can I do now?" Amongst all the other things I've got going on in my life, some really exciting things. I'm good at going off in tangents as well. 'Cause I have some really exciting things going on in my life, some other projects with my sales stuff, marketing stuff, and I'm, I keep thinking, "Shall I document that?" 'Cause it... This is about documenting Underwear, but really it's like, why not just document my whole life, you know? But it's like if I commit to that, I gotta keep peppering it in, or else it just seems off. Anyway, so what I wanted to say was like, and then just w- wanted to just be transparent is like I woke up today, I was like, "Am I failing at this? Am I-- Should I have paying clients?" I know. It feels like I've been doing it for a while, to be honest, and I'm enjoying it. Every day I have something to say. Every day there's something to improve. I'm learning a hell of a lot. But then sometimes you're like, "Wow, I'm just running ads on X and Meta," and like no customers. So it's just a... I'm just doing a record of how I'm ... I guess most people wouldn't record these bits, right? And that, that's what Underwear's about, so I'm just battling, battling that kind of thought in my head of this is really What I'm thinking and feeling right now and getting it on camera and just talking is really what I want Underway to be, which is a record of just the transparency of something like this, whatever it is, you know? Might not be interesting. People might not watch this and be like, "Oh, that was so cool." It's like boring. But st- not all storytelling, you know, not all parts of a film are that interesting. It's not entertaining the whole way through, you know? So, I'll tell you, I'm gonna share my screen, guys. I'm gonna show you some, show you some things. Let's have a look at my Slack, shall we? Hopefully there's nothing on here that's too private. Oh yeah, cool. Tell you what, one thing, I don't know if you can see this on my screen. Um, show only the boxes. Clear the boxes. Okay. This is actually really cool. I don't know if you can see it, but now when I share my screen... And this, th- you can do this on other bits of... You can do this on Loom, although Loom is just poop. Lately, Loom is an absolute letdown. But anyway, when you share your screen now, I can actually create what I want it to record. Like, I can turn, um, put a box over the exact thing I want it to kind of record rather than sharing. You know, sometimes I wanna share my screen, but there's lots of private info there and I'm like, "I don't want that on there," and it'd be messy. So now I can just create a box around what I wanna show. Click show only this. Now, I think It's showing that on my screen. The one thing it, uh, I need to work on is it's not clear now once... 'Cause I've put the box over it, it's not clear what you guys can now see. So I can only see that when I see the end result which is, it is what it is. So this is... I think I said this before, I'm working with Graft. This is run by... I forget his name even though I read his content every day. He's... Looks bad, doesn't it? Anyway. God, don't you hate it when you just re- can't remember something so prominent in your mind? Cody Snyder, I think. Anyway, he, he runs and, and owns Graft. Really good team. Y- you should follow him if you're interested in this stuff. But he r- he, they run my Facebook ads in a way, but it's more agentic. Um, like learns from itself, kinda does it. And I, w- I'm working with Garrett here, who kind of oversees it, and we go back and forth. And like, I- I'm really wary 'cause I've worked with lots of marketing people in the past and still do to this day in my, in my other work. I'm always very careful about how I communicate. I know what it's like being kind of a owner of an agency and having nightmare clients, so it kind of makes me just hold back, pay, and just shut up. But because the way I've been kind of feeling about this lately, I said to him... Do you know what? I'm just gonna show you guys, like... Um, do I show it here? Don't know where I put it, guys. Maybe here? Oh no, that's what I'm already on. I'm gonna-- I'm determined. Anyway, okay, so, so I said here, and this was Thursday, guys. So I said like, you know, "What do you think to just running some paid traffic to a landing page to get people to sign up with a paid account?" Well, duh. I don't mean duh, I just mean like that would be a good idea, right? I think like it, it just must be the go-to for everyone. Like, okay, you're running paid ads, you've got something, give it to people for free. I just think I went about it in the wrong way. 'Cause I think about for me when, um, when I've signed up to anywhere, I do want to try it. I don't wanna pay for it until I, I'm like, "Yeah, this is awesome." Then I'm like, "Pay, take my money." And it is really annoying when you don't get to do that, you know? S- or the, the other thing that's annoying is sometimes like when you get something for free and they've oversold it, so you get whatever it gives you and you're like, "Oh, that was so underwhelming. Not worth it." So anyway, let's get back to the point. I think I've been doing it wrong. I think I've been sending it, "Everyone join for free. Like just give us your email, that's it. You don't have to put your card in." Like there's no friction, which means I, I, I would just imagine so many people are just aimlessly, "Oh, that looks cool. Get in. Cool. Oh, I'm out." You know? And so it's like I'm paying for people to do that, and it feels less like I'd just rather have pay a lot for one paying client than fucking 30 people joining for free and jo- jumping out. It seems logical really. So I asked him that, and that was earlier on on Thursday, so that was early his time in the US. And then in that same thought process, I was like, "Do you know what? I'm gonna create landing pages." If I'm gonna send page traffic to a page to convert people to sign up to pay, then the landing pages that they land on need to be really good. Like, to make people take out their card on one-- when they land on that page, they have to be good. So I created them. So I'm actually gonna stop sharing my screen. Go here. Then I'm gonna share my screen, then I'm gonna go here, share with audio, share all of it. Okay. So this is the landing page I created. You can't film the beginning twice. Steve Jobs. Imagine what Steve Jobs built Apple. So it's really cool. Yeah, we spoke about that. Do you know what's a funny thing is I put that on X, Twitter a while ago, and they've removed it from there completely. And I guess 'cause it's maybe copyright, I'm talking about Steve Jobs. Kind of a bit weird. But anyway, see, I created a founding offer where you basically get the series memberships, which is $79 for the $29 one, right? Pick one closest to you. It's just, it's just selling it, right? Remembers what you said last time. It connects to all of these things record of the company or it happened, you know, it, it sells it and it's pretty good. Okay, so, you know, let's get back to what I was saying
Made with underway. It reads the founder’s day, asks them about it out loud, and turns the answers into episodes like this one.
