The second guy who signed up and paid asked for a refund. The ups and downs of building a business. But let's get into it, let's see what the silver lining is, because I'm actually pleased, and I'll tell you for why.
Bearing in mind, guys, I'm only running ads right now to a free trial. The first person who signed up, I looked into it and thought, really it shouldn't be people paying, but he came direct, so maybe someone gave him the link, the website. He just read through it and signed up. Great. Haven't spoken to him.
The second person signed up a few hours after. He came from one of the ads, and I thought that just makes no sense, because it only allows you to sign up with a trial. Maybe I should make them pay. Anyway, I looked into it and thought, do you know what, I'm going to have to reach out to him and offer him a refund, because he's meant to be in a trial.
Now I don't actually, believe it or not, because of data issues and the laws governing data, I can't access any customer's stuff. The only things I can get are like someone's series name, or title, or business. That's as far as I can get. But I'd noticed, I'd been told he'd set up his series, so he'd done some stuff in the app. Even though he'd signed up for a trial and seen that he'd been charged, he still carried on, he didn't make a fuss of it. So I thought, this is the type of guy I want. I got his email and saw it was a business email, saw his business, legitimate, very high level business. I thought, that's the exact type of customer I want.
He did reach out, so I sent him the refund, had that taken care of, and now we're down in revenue. We've gone from sixty dollars made back down to twenty nine. But I'm super happy, guys, because at the same time, we had seven signups today onto the free trial. That's seven people on a seven day free trial, seven people who put their card in, so more skin in the game. We actually had three people as well who tried to do that, card failed, and they didn't try again. And that's after running ads on the new system for just a day and a half or something. So I'm really pleased with that, and I'm just getting this on camera so I can remember this point, where I was happy genuinely refunding someone, happy getting free trial signups.
Because it just feels like the start of a business is this, these first few days. Add three hundred and sixty five days to it and maybe having ten signups in this sense is a thing of the past, maybe a hundred signups is the norm. Just putting it out there.
I'd share my screen like I do, if you've been following along you know I like to share my screen. I would do that, but it would give away all the names and all the details of all the customers, which I cannot do.
One of the guys who signed up as a trial, Dr Luke, he signed up on a trial, but I sent him a message, we had a chat, and I called him. We had a chat, I helped him around Underway, showed him what it can do, explained it, and now we're in touch. I think what's really important at this stage for me is obviously not the money, because I'm losing way more money than I'm making, obviously. But what matters to me is the experience of the people using it.
So it's really cool that people see an ad and, I asked this customer, so what did you see, how did it make you feel? He saw an ad and straight away he just read it, read through the website, and he was like, that's exactly what I need. I've been feeling bad that I'm doing X, Y and Z in my business, I know I need to be doing this and documenting it, but I'm just not doing it. That's the feeling that I had, and I kind of just explained it to him.
At the end of the day, for me, feedback is so, so important right now. I got some tips from him in terms of how I could make things simpler, help people, help him understand. I also spoke to another trial customer who asked if we could connect to Upwork, something I hadn't thought of. So I'm doing that now, I'm building that into it. He also gave me some ideas, it wasn't that he was giving me ideas directly, he just had some issues with X, Y and Z, which gave me some ideas in how to improve that onboarding experience.
So for me, this is just all great feedback, because it moves me closer and closer to a product that's more intuitive than I could have ever thought.
