a reddit post with every episode

the short version

every episode now comes with a reddit post.

a title and a body, made of your own sentences from the episode, word for word, with only a few joining words added. it is a draft: put it in your own voice before it goes, because reddit's readers spot a post written for someone. it sits with the other posts on the episode page, beside x and linkedin, on the web and on the phone.

press post to reddit and reddit opens with it filled in. you add the video, you pick the community, you press post.

why reddit gets its own

some of the most honest build-in-public writing anywhere is on reddit. people post their weekly numbers there, their failed launches, the month revenue went backwards.

it is also the least forgiving place to post. a linkedin post pasted into r/buildinpublic reads as marketing within a sentence, and marketing gets downvoted, called out in the comments, or removed by a moderator before anyone sees it.

so the reddit post is not the linkedin post with the hashtags taken off. it is written for people who are building something themselves and want the detail.

what is in it

the same outline as every other post underway writes, so the story is the same wherever it lands:

• a title that says which episode it is and what happened, plainly, the way a person titles their own update
• why a stranger should care, in two or three sentences
• what actually happened, with the real numbers and the real failures wherever you said them
• a short list of what else the episode covers, in the order it came up
• who it is for

what is not in it: links, hashtags, the name of the app it was made with, and anything that reads like a pitch. the people reading can tell, and the moderators remove it.

like every post, it is written from the transcript. no number you did not say, no outcome that did not happen. change any line in the box before it goes; it saves as you type and never touches the cut.

why there is no connect button

youtube, linkedin, tiktok, instagram and x are connected once, and the episode page posts to them for you. reddit is not, for two reasons.

the first is reddit's. since november 2025 every new app needs reddit's written approval before it may use the api at all, and a commercial one needs an agreement on top. it is not a switch we can turn on.

the second is ours. every subreddit sets its own rules: one allows a project post once, one only in a weekly thread, one wants a flair, one wants your account to be a month old. an app posting the same shape of post into communities it has not read is how an app's posts become spam, and how a founder's account gets banned. that is not a risk worth taking to save one tap.

so the hand-off is deliberate. underway writes the words. reddit's own page opens with the title and the body filled in, in r/buildingonunderway, and you can pick another community there. the words go on your clipboard too, in case reddit drops them when you switch to the video tab.

post the video, not a link

download the episode and add it on reddit's video tab. a video uploaded to reddit plays in the feed as people scroll. a link to somewhere else gets scrolled past, and in a lot of communities it gets removed.

the episode already carries made with underway in the corner. that is the only mention it needs.

how to use it without getting banned

• read the community's rules before your first post there. they are on the community's page, under about on the phone and down the right-hand side on a computer
• post as yourself and say it is your project
• spend more time commenting on other people's builds than posting your own
• post in one community at a time, not the same words in five on the same day
• every episode can go to r/buildingonunderway, underway's own community on reddit, where every founder posts theirs and one a day is welcome. in a community like r/buildinpublic, post once a week, not every episode
• reply to the comments, especially in the first few hours
• never ask anyone to upvote it

the format suits reddit better than most places. a numbered episode, the same day each week, with the bad weeks in it, is exactly what build-in-public communities reward. the founder who turns up every week gets recognised. the one who turns up once with a link does not.
