a look that is yours, every episode

the short version

every episode has a new look, and it is the one underway's own brand guide always said it should have.

• the episode label burned top left of every frame in gold mono, with the series and the day under it in grey
• a title card with the episode's name set large on the left, a short gold rule, and the line on what was at stake under it
• captions in a heavy display face, with the word you are saying sitting on a gold block as you say it
• a cover with the words low and large, and the last line on gold

the gold is the accent. it starts as underway's gold, and any series still on the old grey default gets the gold now. a colour you chose yourself is yours and stays.

why it changed

the old default accent was the same pale grey as the text on the card. so the episode number, the one thing on a card that is meant to catch the eye, came out grey on charcoal, and every episode looked like nobody had designed it. the title card was small too: on a phone you could barely read it.

that matters more than it sounds. a series is a brand. somebody who sees episode 12 and then episode 40 should know it is the same show before they hear a word, and that recognition compounds the way the episode count does. a bland card throws that away every single day.

there was also a quieter problem. the look was drawn in three places, the file the server makes, the preview on the episode page, and the export in the browser, and the three had drifted apart. now one piece of code draws the card, the cover and the captions for all of them, so what you see in the preview is what goes out.

the gold means now

gold is used sparingly on purpose: the episode label, one short rule on the card, the word being said, the last line of the cover. that is all. the moment a colour is decorative it stops meaning anything, and on underway gold means this episode, this moment.

the lit word in the captions follows your voice, one word at a time, from the timings in the transcript. it does not pick out the punchy word or add emphasis you did not give. it only shows where you are.

what did not change

• your words, and the order you said them in. the look is production, not content.
• your logo, your colours and your typeface. if you set your own, they are used everywhere the new look goes.
• the caption style you chose: outline, block or clean. the lit word sits on top of whichever one you picked.
• episodes you have already posted. they stay exactly as they went out. an episode picks up the new look the next time its file is made.

where to change it

account, series, brand, the same place as before. the accent colour is the gold. change it there once and every card, cover, caption and label follows. set it early and leave it: identity compounds from the episode it starts at.
