the vault opens on your episodes, and context on your day

the short version

two screens got quieter. the vault opens on your episodes, straight away, with nothing to scroll past. context opens on where your day came from, as numbers and logos, with every section folded but one. everything that explained how either screen works moved to settings, under the day. nothing was taken away. recording an episode starts from today, and only from today.

why

we looked at both screens as someone who had never seen the app. the vault on a phone opened on a dark block, then the week in one cut, then the month's film, then a panel of filters with its own heading, and only then the first episode. the vault is about videos. a newcomer should see videos.

context was worse. a paragraph on the dark that nobody would read. a line like read three things since your last episode, three hours ago, set in plain text on white. the sources, the best thing on the page, as a list of sentences. then the tray, the director and me, the screenshot shortcut, a box for a link or a line, check again and use these, all on screen at once. every piece was useful. together they were a wall.

the vault now

  • a short dark header: the vault, its title, and the episode count in gold, because the number is now.
  • the filters in one white bar, with the season and the search on one line, on a phone too.
  • then the episode tiles. on a phone the first one is on screen when the vault opens.
  • under the episodes, round-ups and films, folded until you open it: the week in one cut, the month in one film, the trailer, and the weeks still waiting to be cut.
  • round-ups and trailers are still filters of their own, so a cut is one tap away.
  • no record button. the vault is where episodes are kept, not where they start.

context now

the header has one line, what today turned up and where it came from, and then the day as numbers: how many lines were collected, how many are ticked, a bar between the two, how many sources it reads, and how long ago it last read them. check again reads the day again. change how the day is read opens settings.

under it, three sections, and only one is open at a time. where today comes from is first: a tile for each source with its own logo, you, your inbox, github, your calendar, whop, argos and the rest, each with what its last read turned up as a number, and when. a read that failed says why, in red. folded, its head is a row of the logos. today's tray is the lines themselves, with a tick each, and folded its head counts every group. add to today is every way of adding something the app could not see: a freestyle, a moment, the screen, a clip or a photo, a link or a line.

the tray still works the way it did. what you capture yourself arrives ticked. what the app collects is read by the director, which ticks what matters to the season and says why under each line. your own tick or untick always wins, and every tick is saved as you make it, so there is nothing to press on the way out.

where the explanations went

account, series, the day. who ticks the day lives there now, the director or me. so does what each group of the tray holds and how it defaults, what each way of adding is for, the screenshot shortcut, and the reminder that your site and your docs belong in your knowledge base, read once and known in every episode. context shows what was collected and where from. settings says how.

on the phone

the same, in the same pass. the vault opens on the tiles, with round-ups and films folded under them, and covers load in the order the tiles are, a few at a time, so the first ones appear first. context has the numbers on the dark, the source tiles, the tray and add to today, one open at a time. change how the day is read opens settings on the day.

and both screens draw from what is already on the device before anything is asked of the server, so the first thing you see is your own work, not a spinner.

faqs

where did the week in one cut go?

under your episodes in the vault, inside round-ups and films. open it and the week in one cut is at the top, with every round-up, the month's film and the trailer under it. the round-ups filter still shows them on their own.

how do i choose who ticks the day now?

account, series, the day, or change how the day is read on context. the same switch is still on today's context card.

can i still add a link or a screenshot to today?

yes. open add to today on context. a link is read once into a line; anything else you type is kept as your own line. paste a screenshot anywhere on the page and it lands as a still.

why is there no record button in the vault any more?

because recording starts from today. one place to start keeps the ritual simple, and the vault is for watching what you have made.
