the episode screen on the phone, now the web's

the short version

the episode screen on the phone is now the episode page on the web, tab for tab. same four tabs in the same order, the same sections in each, the same words on every heading and button, and it opens on the cut, on both.

it had fallen behind. the phone opened an episode on a different tab, said rendering on the server with nothing moving under it, showed an empty box where the cover should be, asked you to press a button for posts the web had already written, and called a public series' new episode private. all of that is fixed, and something now stops it drifting again.

what you will see on the phone

  • the counter: one bar from transcribing to the finished file, with the server's clock running while it renders, and make today's episode or download today's episode under it. it sits on details, and on every tab while something is in flight, as on the web
  • the cut: the player, then your answers with one switch each, every sentence a tap away, then start the cut again and render it again
  • details: the name, the description with write it for me, the chapters, the subtitle, the card the episode opens with as it is drawn, previously on, burn captions into the video, the question cards, and the transition for this one episode folded away
  • share: the cover first, drawn for you the first time you open it, in both shapes side by side; then the publish card; the channels once the file is made; the clips; and the posts, already written, one place at a time with its own button under it
  • footage: every answer with its take to play, its words in timed paragraphs, re-transcribe and download raw

the publish card says what will happen

a public series lists each new episode on your page as soon as its file is made, unless you turned publish each new episode off. the card now says exactly that, on both surfaces: goes on your page on its own. it used to say private on the phone, with a button to hold the episode back, which was the card for a series that had not gone public yet.

a series that is not public yet still shows private, with make this episode public, and claims an address right there if it has none. an episode in the vault from before you went public is never listed on its own.

the cover draws itself

on the web the cover was offered the first time share opened: a line lifted from what you said, over a frame of you a third of the way in. the phone waited until the file was rendered, so a just-filmed episode sat on no cover yet. now the phone asks for the same thing the moment share opens, rendered or not, and the server draws it from your takes. both shapes show, the one the episode is and the one the other platforms want, and either can go to your camera roll.

faster to open

the phone read every episode in your vault one at a time, every time you opened one, and again after every sync. with sixty episodes that was sixty trips before the screen could draw. it reads them in one trip now, reads the session, the series and the cut at the same time, keeps the state of your connections for the visit, and only fetches the file to play when the cut tab is open.

find clips works on the first press

find clips could say that's a lot in one go on its very first press. the season storyboard on today checks itself every few seconds while it rebuilds, and each check was being counted as one of the day's long writes, the same allowance find clips draws on. a check costs nothing, so it no longer counts. only a rebuild that actually starts does.

what stays on the web

three things, and the phone says so where each would be: the word-by-word editor and change this cut, one episode's own colours and the pictures behind its cards, and opening on a different moment from the previous episode. re-recording an answer from footage is on the web too, for now.

why it cannot drift again

both screens now draw from one description of the episode screen: the tabs and their order, the tab it opens on, the sections in each tab and their order, every heading, the words of the counter and the words of the publish card. the phone holds an exact copy, and a check that runs on every change fails if the copies differ, if either screen stops using it, or if a section on either comes out of order.

do i need to do anything?

no. update the app when it asks, and every episode opens the new way.

will my public series still list new episodes on its own?

yes. that never changed; the phone now says so instead of calling the episode private.

where is hold it back?

a public series lists every new episode unless publish each new episode is off in publishing. an episode already held back still shows, with stop holding it back.

can i edit single words on the phone?

not yet. strike or restore whole sentences and answers on the phone; single words are on the web, in the same episode, under the cut.

the phone and the web are one product with two front doors. start a series.
