private video diary app

the short version

a private video diary app keeps the footage yours until you decide otherwise.

underway is that kind of diary. every episode stays private until you send it. you can hold any episode back. the memory it keeps of your series is yours to read, fix or delete.

it is a build-in-public diary made by interview, so the questions are about your work. you can still stay private for as long as you need.

private by default

the homepage lead is plain: "Everything stays private until you choose to go public."

and in the FAQ: "Every episode stays private until you send it, and most people start that way."

recording and posting are separate choices. you film the interview. you get a numbered episode. nothing is public until you send it.

the risk answer on the homepage puts the same idea in stealth words: "Then build in stealth. Same app, same episodes, nothing leaves until you say."

so a private video diary app here is not a different product. it is the same interview, the same cut, with the vault closed until you open it.

private on every plan

the plans page for this is /private-until-you-go-public.

"every underway series is private until you choose to go public." that was always true, free episodes included. there is no separate plan for staying private.

the FAQ on that page: "no. every episode stays private in the vault until you publish it, on every plan."

when you are ready, you go public from Publishing in Account. the page: "go public when you choose, from Publishing in Account."

your call per episode

privacy is not only all-or-nothing.

"or hold any episode back for good. private is the default, and it stays your call."

the stealth guide says the same with more detail: "any single episode can be held back for good from its own page, whatever the rest of the vault does." and: "some stealth days should stay private, and that is your call per episode."

so you can release a run and still keep one day in the vault. that is the per-episode control the queue stands on, in the site's own words.

/coming-out-of-stealth-mode also says every series starts that way: "every series starts in stealth, and nothing in the vault is ever published on its own."

a memory only you see

the interview remembers the series so the next questions are not blank.

"Underway keeps a private memory of your series: what you said you’d do by Friday, who Carlo is, that cash has come up three weeks running."

you control that memory: "Read, fix or delete anything it remembers. Nobody else sees it."

that is the other half of a private video diary app. the footage stays private until you send it. the notes it keeps about your series stay private too, and you can change or delete them.

what the diary actually is

"Underway is a build-in-public diary made by interview: whenever you choose, it asks about your work and cuts your answers into a numbered episode."

"Nothing reordered, nothing invented, and the archive is yours whether you post it or not."

how you answer: "Camera, voice or screen. Choose each time."

how long: about three minutes of talking, never past 5:00, whenever suits you. the interview card shows "about 3:00, never past 5:00".

when the cut is ready, the how-it-works line is the choice again: "Keep it private, put it on your page, or post it."

it works on the web today. the iPhone app is on the App Store too. the homepage: "Today, the vault, the cut, the cover and posting, screen for screen with the web." and "Get it on the App Store".

three episodes free, no card.

this page is the privacy angle. the walkthrough of the app is /founder-video-diary-app. how the interview asks, hears you, and asks next is /journal-app-that-asks-you-questions.
