underway had editing controls. we ripped most of them out, and the episode is now your answers, in the order you said them.
the reason is not taste, and it is not that editing is bad. it is that on an ordinary day of building, you do not know what to say, and you know that whatever you say will have to be cut afterwards. so you would have to set up a camera, film yourself probably three times, then sit in an editor for an hour. so it doesn't happen. the diary dies on the editing, not on the filming.
so the product does the job an editor would do, but it does it the same way every time without asking you. the interview chooses the angle before you start, so there is one thread to follow rather than a whole day to trim down afterwards. each answer is one take. the cut keeps every sentence you said and drops filler, false starts and dead air. captions are burned in, your name and the episode number go on the front, and the file is on your phone a few minutes after you finish.
afterwards you can still drop an answer you do not want in, strike a line, or take a word out. the recipe keeps every sentence rather than only the survivors, so a line you struck can always come back. what you cannot do is turn today into a better hook. answers stay in the order you gave them. that is the one editing decision we made for you and will not hand back, because chronology is the honesty in the format.
we never reorder answers to make a better opening. we never add words you did not say. we never make anything up: no generated clips, no stock footage, no invented moments. if nothing you said could open the episode cold, the title card carries the setup, and the first thing the viewer hears is still you.
polish is a separate matter, and we are not squeamish about it. a jump cut left bare reads as sloppy, not authentic, so cuts get a short, consistent transition. dialogue is levelled so a kitchen table sounds like a room someone meant to record in. face smoothing exists, off by default, and set once for the series so episode 3 and episode 190 still look like the same person. every one of these is chosen once and applied to everything, never decided per episode, because per-episode choices are how a daily ritual becomes a daily project.
the bar we are aiming at is this: a founder who would never open an editor ends up with something that looks like they can edit. the honesty is about the content, what happened, in the order it happened, and it was never about the footage looking rough.
the footage from today is the only footage of today there will ever be. the least an editor can do is not get in the way of it.
