descript vs riverside (and when you need neither)

descript vs riverside comes down to which half of the job is hard for you. Descript is an editor that also records: you edit video by editing the transcript, and its AI editor, Underlord, does much of the cut. Riverside is a recording studio that also edits: each guest is recorded on their own device in full quality, and since 26 October 2026 four AI agents prepare the session, edit it, clip it and post it. if your problem is the edit, pick Descript. if your problem is recording other people well, pick Riverside.

both start from a recording you make, with a conversation you've already planned. if you're one founder with no guest and no idea what to say on camera this week, neither solves that, and that's the job underway does: it interviews you, out loud, about your business and what you actually worked on, then cuts the episode. we make underway, so every fact about Descript and Riverside below comes from their own pages, read on 28 October 2026, and each is credited where it's better.

to judge the third option by its output rather than our description, a real series made with underway, every episode in order, is here.

key takeaways

  • Descript is editing first. delete a word in the transcript and it's gone from the video, with Underlord, Studio Sound and filler-word removal on top. it records too, with Rooms and a screen recorder.
  • Riverside is recording first. separate tracks for every person, up to 4K, and now four agents: Producer, Editor, Clipper and Marketer, on every plan.
  • on price they start close: Descript from $16 a month billed yearly ($24 monthly), Riverside from $24 a month billed yearly ($29 monthly). both have free plans with a watermark.
  • pick Descript if you enjoy shaping a video yourself. pick Riverside if you record guests, webinars or live streams.
  • pick underway if there's no guest and no recording yet, and what you need is something to ask you the questions.

descript vs riverside: the short answer

each vendor's own comparison page declares itself the winner. the honest answer is that they've moved towards each other and still lean different ways. Descript was built around an idea: video you can edit like a document. Riverside was built around a problem: a remote guest on a bad connection sounding like a remote guest on a bad connection.

so ask where your hours go. if they go on trimming, tightening and polishing after you've recorded, Descript is aimed at exactly that. if they go on getting a clean recording of two or more people in different places, Riverside is aimed at that, and its agents now take a good share of the work after the recording too.

what Descript does well

Descript calls itself AI editing for every kind of video. its central idea is still the best one in the category: the transcript is the timeline. you read what was said, delete the sentence you don't want, and the video follows. on top of that it removes filler words and retakes in a click, cleans voices with Studio Sound, and cuts long recordings into short clips.

Underlord is its AI video editor. Descript says it can turn a raw recording into a tight cut, and you can tell it what you want or ask it what's needed. for recording, Rooms records podcasts and video with other people remotely, up to 10 participants on every plan, and there's a screen recorder for demos and walk-throughs. so Descript does record, whatever some comparison pages say.

Descript's pricing page lists four plans: Free, Hobbyist at $16 a month billed yearly or $24 monthly, Creator at $24 or $35, and Business at $50 or $65. Free gives 60 minutes of media a month, 720p export, a watermark and 100 AI credits once. Hobbyist removes the watermark and gives 10 hours of media and 5 hours of remote recording a month at 1080p; Creator gives 30 hours, 15 recording hours and 4K.

what Riverside does well, agents included

Riverside records each person locally, on their own device, so the file doesn't depend on the call: separate tracks, up to 4K video on paid plans. around the recorder it has text-based editing, Magic Clips for short vertical clips, live streaming and webinars, and AI thumbnails on its Grow plan.

on 26 October 2026 Riverside added Riverside Agents, four of them. its agents page describes them this way: the Producer preps the session and helps you run it, the Editor turns your raw recording into a standout episode, the Clipper finds your best moments and cuts them for social, and the Marketer writes your captions and schedules every post. Riverside's launch post adds that the Editor builds an editing plan for the whole episode and works through it with you, and that nothing goes out without your sign-off.

Riverside says the agents are on every plan, that what they can do depends on the plan, and that features which use AI credits still use them when an agent applies them. Pro is $29 a month or $24 billed yearly, with 5 hours of recording a month, up to 4K, unlimited text-based editing and 2,000 starting AI credits. Grow is $39 or $34 yearly. the free plan is 2 hours once, at 720p, with a watermark, and Riverside offers 14 days free.

when you need neither

Descript and Riverside both assume the hard part has already happened: someone has decided what the video is about and sat down to say it. for a podcast host with a guest booked, that's true. for a founder who wants to document their business, it usually isn't. there's no guest, no producer and no script, just a day of work and a vague sense that someone should be filming it.

a better editor doesn't fix that, and neither does a better recorder. what fixes it is the other half of a conversation: something that knows what you're working on and asks you about it.

that's where underway starts. it reads what you connect, read only: GitHub, your calendar, email you forward, Slack, your shop or payments, your website. before your first episode you film episode zero, a short interview about what you're building, who it's for and where it stands, and that becomes standing context for every interview after it. so when you sit down to record, underway already knows what you've been doing.

an alternative to descript vs riverside: underway's setup screen asking what kind of episode, with cards for a video interview, an audio interview, just chat, walk me through it, watch me work and a guest
step one in underway today: pick the kind of episode. shown with underway's example series; the co-host cards are greyed because the example account has no co-host time.

how underway works instead

  • pick the kind of episode: a video interview, the same by voice only, just chat, a walk-through of your screen, a conversation with the AI co-host, or a guest on a link.
  • pick what it's about, from topics it suggests out of your season and what it read of your day, or type your own. each thing you pick becomes one question.
  • answer. each question is asked out loud and stays on screen. there's no countdown: you answer for as long as it takes, and it ends after the last question.
  • get the episode. minutes later it's cut on full sentences, filler and dead air out, captioned, with your episode number on the front, in the order you said things.
  • review if you want to. switch an answer off, or strike a line in the transcript, and the next render follows.

the order matters. underway never moves your best line to the front of an episode, because a diary that's been reordered stops being a diary. Shorts are cut separately, to advertise the episode, and those may open on any line. episodes are numbered, so episode 47 follows episode 46, and your page lists them in order for anyone who wants the whole story. on days you'd rather be pushed, the AI co-host is a live conversation that reacts and follows up on what you say, on camera or by voice, at whatever time of day suits you.

the finished episode in underway, answer by answer: four interview questions, each with its transcript, its length and a switch to keep it
the editing that's left after an underway interview: one switch per answer, and any sentence can be struck, Descript's best idea kept for the minute you need it. shown with underway's example series, an invented founder.

what underway won't do: edit footage you shot somewhere else, give you a timeline, run a webinar or a live stream, or reorder what you said into a punchier story. if you need any of those, Descript or Riverside is the right tool, and nothing stops you using one of them for guests and underway for the episodes that are just you.

what underway costs

every new account starts with a 7-day free trial of Founder, Series or Studio. you add a card at the start and nothing is charged until day 8; cancel before then and you pay nothing. Founder is $29.99 a month or $299.90 a year: the interview, the finished episode, Shorts when you press Find clips, the words for every platform, your page and every connection. Series is $79.99 a month or $799.90 a year and adds one tap to post to the networks you connect, the weekly round-up and the podcast feed. Studio is $129.99 a month and adds things like YouTube thumbnails with your face in them and motion graphics on your episodes. your raw recordings download on every plan.

what results look like

the clearest result we can show is our own. Rich Lovatt, who makes underway, films a numbered series about building it, with it: each episode an interview about that day's work, cut and captioned without opening an editor. they're on the series page in order. Descript and Riverside help you make a better recording; underway helps the recording happen at all.

faqs

is Descript or Riverside better?

Descript is better for editing: you edit video by editing its transcript, with Underlord as an AI editor. Riverside is better for recording guests: each person is recorded locally on a separate track, up to 4K. neither is better for one founder with nothing recorded; that's what underway is for.

can Descript record remote guests?

yes. Descript's Rooms records podcasts and video with other people remotely, with up to 10 participants on every plan and between 2 and 25 hours of remote recording depending on the plan.

what are Riverside's AI agents?

four agents launched on 26 October 2026: a Producer that preps the session and helps you run it, an Editor that builds an editing plan and works through it with you, a Clipper that cuts your best moments for social, and a Marketer that writes captions and schedules posts. Riverside says they're on every plan and nothing goes out without your sign-off.

which is cheaper, Descript or Riverside?

Descript's cheapest paid plan is $16 a month billed yearly or $24 monthly. Riverside's is $24 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly. both have free plans that put a watermark on what you export.

what if I don't have a guest or a recording?

then the hard part is knowing what to say, not editing or recording. underway interviews you about your business and your day, asks the questions out loud, and cuts a numbered episode from your answers.
