watch me work: hours of your screen, sped up

the short version

there is a new kind of episode in underway: watch me work.

you pick the windows you are working in, box what people may see in each, and get on with your day. underway catches your screen once every three seconds for as long as you work. whenever something happens, you talk over it, or record a moment on camera. when you stop, the episode is made: hours of work played back fast, a clock in the corner counting the real time, slowing to real speed for every moment you stopped to say something, then speeding up again.

it is a time lapse that stops to talk.

why this exists

most build-in-public posts show the result. the shipped feature, the new page, the number that went up. the part that took the hours, the bit people would actually learn from, never makes it in, because nobody can film four hours and nobody would watch four hours.

and some work only makes sense as a process. three ai agents building three parts of the same thing at once. a design that went through nine versions. a bug hunt that went round in circles before it landed. the outcome is a screenshot. the process is the story.

watch me work keeps the hours and makes them watchable. four hours becomes about a minute and a quarter of sped-up screen, plus every moment at real speed.

how it works

  • on the setup screen, pick video, then watch me work on the kind row, and set up watch me work
  • add a window: a claude window, an editor, a terminal, a dashboard. up to four, side by side or in a grid
  • box what people may see in each one. everything outside the boxes is frosted before it is recorded, so the list of your other conversations, or a client's name in a sidebar, never reaches the file
  • start watching me work, and work
  • when something happens, press talk over it (or hold t) and talk. or press record a moment (or m) and a camera bubble records you beside the screen
  • stop and finish when you are done. it stops itself at eight hours

a small window stays on top of whatever you are doing, with the red light, the clock and the two buttons, so you never have to go looking for the underway tab mid-flow.

your voice only when you ask

the microphone and the camera are only on while a moment is being recorded. nothing listens in between. that matters more than it sounds: you are going to take phone calls while you work, talk to whoever is in the room, swear at the build. none of it is recorded unless you pressed the button.

the screen is the only thing caught all session, and only the parts of it inside your boxes.

what the episode looks like

  • the episode card, like every episode
  • the work, fast, with a clock in the corner counting the real hours: 0m, 47m, 2h 05m
  • the speed easing down into each moment, so it does not jump
  • the moment at real speed: your screen as it was, your voice over it, captioned. a camera moment puts you in a circle in the corner
  • speeding up again into the next stretch of work

nothing is reordered. only the speed changes. there is no music under it, because an episode is your voice and nothing else, and the silence of the fast stretches is the work.

it is an episode like any other: numbered, in your vault, counting towards your streak, posted from share. there is no cut to edit; the file is the episode.

why it costs so little

recording four hours of screen at full speed would be gigabytes, a fan that never stops and a file nobody wants. a frame every three seconds is a few thousand pictures, mostly of a screen that barely changed, which compresses to almost nothing. it goes up to your account in small pieces as you work, so if the tab closes at hour three you lose a minute, not the morning.

the moments are recorded at full speed, because they are the bits that matter.

where it works

chrome or edge on a computer. the phone cannot share its screen, so watch me work is not on the phone. an episode made on the computer shows on the phone like any other.

how do i make a time lapse of my screen while i work?

in underway, choose watch me work on the setup screen, add the windows you are working in and start. it catches a frame every three seconds and plays the session back fast, slowing down wherever you stopped to talk.

how long is the finished video?

the fast stretches come to about a minute and a quarter whatever the length of the session, plus every moment you recorded at real speed.

does it record my microphone the whole time?

no. the microphone and camera are only on while you are recording a moment. nothing is heard in between.

can i show several windows at once?

yes, up to four, side by side or in a grid, each with its own boxes for what people may see.
