every short gets its own cover, and you choose the music

the short version

every short underway cuts from an episode now has a cover of its own, and you choose the music that plays under your clips.

and the share tab, where an episode goes out to youtube, linkedin, tiktok, instagram and x, is now one card per place, every button the same size in the same spot.

why each short needs its own cover

a short is an advert for the episode. it opens on the one line most likely to stop someone scrolling, and it lives in a grid on youtube, instagram and tiktok next to every other short you have posted.

for a day, every clip went out under the episode's one cover. three clips from the same episode looked like the same post three times. in a grid that reads as a mistake, and nobody taps the third copy of something they have already scrolled past.

so each clip now gets a cover of its own, made from that clip's own words. on series, where your episodes get pro thumbnails, each clip gets one too: you, from your own face library, standing in a scene made for that clip, with a few big words from it, drawn tall for shorts, reels and tiktok. on other plans it is a frame from the clip's opening with its line over it.

what the cover looks like

a clip's cover matches the episode's. where the episode's cover is a pro thumbnail, the clip's is one too, from the clip's own words. where it is a frame of you, the clip's is in the same design: the episode's number in the corner, the series and the date under it, your line big and low.

so a grid of your clips reads as one series, the way your vault does, and every tile still says something different.

  • the face is yours: your own face library on series, or a real frame of you from the clip
  • the words come from what you said in that clip, and promise nothing it does not contain
  • the number is the episode's number as your series counts it now; renumber, and the cover is drawn again
  • change your brand, and the next time the clip is opened its cover is drawn again in the new one

where a clip splits the frame with a screen you were talking about, the cover shows that too, because that is what the short shows.

where the cover goes

instagram takes it as the reel's cover. youtube, linkedin and x take no cover from an app, so the clip goes out with its cover held for its first second, and the still they show is that cover. tiktok takes a moment of the film rather than a picture, so it points at a frame of the clip.

the line under each box on the clip says which of those that place does.

choose the music under your clips

clips have always had a quiet bed of music under your voice, dipping whenever you speak. it is the one place music goes under your words, because a clip is an advert and the episode is not.

until now you could switch it on or off, and that was all. the track was chosen for you.

now the music under clips box names the track, and choose the music opens the same controls a round-up has:

  • the library: every track underway holds a licence for, each with twelve seconds to hear
  • where in the song it starts, dragged along the song's own shape
  • how loud it sits under you
  • how far it drops while you speak: light, normal or heavy
  • how it fades in and out

it is set once, for every clip made after you change it. like the rest of your brand, it is not a choice you make per clip. find clips again on an episode and its new clips carry the music you chose.

on the phone, choose the music picks the track. the start, the level and the fades are on the web, the same as a round-up's music.

the music's credit goes with the clip

most of the library is kevin macleod's, licensed creative commons by attribution 4.0. it is free to use in a video that makes money, on one condition: a credit line goes with the video, naming the track, him and the licence.

episodes and round-ups already carried it in their posts. clips did not, because a clip posts exactly the words in its box. so now each clip remembers the track it was made with, and where that track asks for a credit, the post is your words, a blank line, then the credit.

you see it before anything goes. under the box, added at the end, as the music's licence asks shows the exact line, the count beside the box leaves room for it, and the question before posting says it is on the end. youtube, instagram, linkedin and tiktok get the full line. x gets a shorter one, the track, kevin macleod, cc by 4.0 and the licence's link, so your words keep most of the 280.

a clip made with the music off, or under a track that asks for no credit, adds nothing at all.

the share tab, tidied

the share tab's posting cards had drifted out of line: each button sat at the foot of its card, so a card with something extra in it, like which instagram account, pushed its button lower than the one next to it, and youtube's longer label wrapped onto two lines.

now every card is the same: the place's mark, its name, posted or not posted yet, and one white button straight under that, the same height and the same width in every card, in the same spot across a row. anything that goes with it sits under the button. in the youtube card the button reads post the full episode, because the card already says youtube.

a place that has nothing to offer you yet has no card, so there is never an empty box in the grid.

the phone has the same cards, one under another, on the dark.

faqs

do my old clips get the new covers?

yes. every clip's cover is drawn the first time it is opened after this change, and stays filed after that.

where do the words on a clip's cover come from?

from what you said in that clip. a pro cover keeps them to four big words; a plain cover carries the line the clip opens on.

does changing the music change clips i already made?

no. the music is mixed into the file when a clip is made. find clips again on an episode to make its clips with the music you chose.

can i turn the music off?

yes. switch music under clips off and every clip made after has your voice only.

why is there a music credit on my clip's post?

the track's licence asks for one. kevin macleod's music is free to use on the condition that a credit travels with the video, so it goes after your words, and the box shows it before you post.

does the music go under my episodes too?

no. an episode is your voice. music sits under clips, round-ups and the films, and under the branded opening of an episode if you use one.
