the short version
an episode's cover is now one picture, wherever it goes. the tile in your vault, the still before you press play, the portrait and wide covers on share, the thumbnail on youtube, the cover on an instagram reel and the poster on your page are the same file, named the same way by the web, the phone and the server. and the cover underway makes for you now carries the episode's name over a real frame of you, the same name your vault and your page show, with the lines you said kept beside it to switch to.
what went wrong
rich, who builds underway, looked at his youtube channel next to his vault and they did not match. episodes 9 and 10 showed him in the vault, talking to camera with the title over his face. on youtube the same two episodes had a frame of the screen he was sharing, with the burned-in captions and a ghost of the episode label behind the words. a podcast's still on his page still said episode 28 on an episode that is now 27, from a drawing made before the numbers moved.
three things had drifted apart. the browser drew the cover from the footage on the laptop, while the server drew its own when the footage was not there, and the two did not always agree on the file's name. when the server could not read a frame from a long recording in time, it drew the cover over a still of the finished episode instead, and kept that for good. and the poster on your page was copied once, when the episode went up, and never again.
what happens now
- one rule names the cover file, shared by the web, the phone and the server, so the vault and every post ask for the same picture.
- the vault's tile shows the filed cover first. if none is filed yet and the footage is on this computer, it is drawn here and filed before it is shown.
- the server reads your frame straight from the recording, only as far as the moment it needs, instead of downloading the whole file first.
- if the frame still cannot be read, the cover stands in on a still of the episode and is marked. it is drawn again from your frame half an hour later, and replaces itself when it gets one.
- the title card is used only when there is no picture of you anywhere, as on a podcast.
- youtube's thumbnail is the vault's cover, fitted whole into 16:9. instagram's reel takes the same cover in portrait. linkedin and x make their own still from the video, as they always have.
the name on the cover
the cover underway chose for an episode you never opened used to be a line lifted from what you said. it was honest, but it was not the episode's title, so the vault said one thing and the thumbnail another. now the automatic cover, and the first one you see when you open share, carries the episode's name, with the episode number as your series counts it today. the lines you said are still there: suggest other words brings them back, and any change you make is yours. a cover you already chose keeps its words.
covers that were already out
nothing already posted changes by itself. a video that is already on youtube keeps the thumbnail it went up with until it is set again, and set the thumbnail on share puts the vault's cover on it, so your channel never changes without you knowing. from now on, a cover that had to stand in on the episode's still is drawn again from your frame once it can be read.
on the phone
the phone asks the server for the same file, so its vault and share show the same cover as the web. the first cover it makes for an episode you open on the phone now starts from the episode's name too, the same as the web.
why it matters
a series is recognised in the grid before anyone presses play. if the cover in the vault, the thumbnail on youtube and the poster on your page are three different pictures, the series looks like three different things. one picture, made from a real frame of you and the episode's real name, is the whole point of having a cover at all. nothing in it is generated: no image model draws it, and no words go on it that you did not say or choose.
will my youtube thumbnails change by themselves?
no. new uploads take the vault's cover. a video already on your channel keeps its thumbnail until set the thumbnail on share puts the vault's cover on it.
does this change a cover i chose?
no. a cover you made or edited keeps its words and frame. only covers underway chose for you start from the episode's name.
why did my thumbnail show my screen instead of me?
the server could not read a frame of you from the recording in time and used a still of the finished episode. that still is now a stand-in that is drawn again from your frame.
what does a podcast's cover look like?
the title card with the episode's name, because there is no picture of you in a sound recording.
one picture of you, the same everywhere the episode goes. start a series.
