your google search wins, noticed on today

the short version

connect google search console to underway and it now notices more than the 28-day totals. it counts how many different searches your site shows up for, it tells you when a week on google beat the one before, and it tells you when your site reaches page one for a search. all of it lands in noticed on today, the same place a first payment or a hundredth episode does, and you do not have to set anything up. it is on from the moment you connect.

why this matters for a founder

search is slow. a new site can go weeks with google showing it a handful of times a day, and nothing about that feels like progress. then one week the numbers move: shown four hundred times instead of two hundred, three clicks instead of none, found for forty searches instead of twenty. google will not email you about that. search console will not either unless you open it. and if you are building something, you are not opening search console every morning.

rich, who builds underway, put it simply: the keywords are a milestone. the first time a stranger finds your site by typing something into google is a real moment in a business, and so is the first time you land on page one for a phrase you care about. those are the moments a build in public diary should catch while they are still news.

what underway notices now

  • different searches you show up for in 28 days, at 10, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000. this is the number most people mean by ranking for more keywords.
  • a better week: once a week at most, when the last seven days beat the seven before on times shown, clicks or searches found for. it only ever names what went up. a slower week is never a notification.
  • page one: when your site averages position ten or better for a search it was shown for at least ten times in 28 days. each search is noticed once. the ones already on page one when you connect are the starting line, not news.
  • the two from before stay: clicks in 28 days, from five, and times shown in 28 days, from a hundred.

every one of them arrives as a line in noticed on today with the same three doors as any milestone: record a moment now, save it for your next episode, or not this one. save it and it goes to the top of what to film, and the interview can ask you about it. and like every milestone, the first reading is a baseline: connecting a site that already has a thousand clicks a month does not announce ten milestones on your first morning.

goals

searches you show up for joins clicks and times shown as something you can set a goal against, under nudges in your series settings or as the goal of a season. a goal is a number you chose. hitting it is noticed the same way, and a season goal suggests it might be time to close the season. none of these counts down, and none of them nags.

what does not change

the numbers never steer the episode. they are shown to you and offered to the interview as something that happened, the same as a payment or a new subscriber. the director does not chase what ranked, and nothing in the cut is chosen because of search.

underway still only reads search console. it cannot change anything there, and you can untick google search under nudges if you would rather not hear about it.

faqs

do i need to turn this on?

no. it is on from the moment search console is connected. untick it under nudges in your series settings if you would rather not.

which site does it watch?

the one chosen under which site counts on the search console card. change it and the lines and the counts move to that site.

why didn't it tell me about my best week straight away?

google settles search numbers about two to three days late, so underway compares the last seven settled days with the seven before, and says so at most once a week.

will it tell me when things go down?

no. a week that went down is never a notification. you can always see the daily lines in context.

connect search console in account, connections. start a series.
