ad answers

the short version

once a month, underway asks you six to eight questions about what you are building, out loud.

you answer each one to camera. every answer you keep comes back as its own vertical clip, fifteen to thirty seconds, captioned, ready to post or to run as an ad.

your words, in the order you said them. nothing reworded. nothing added but the captions, a small label and made with underway.

why answers, and not a script

the ads that work now are a real person saying a true thing about something that happened to them.

anyone can make a slick promo in an afternoon. that is exactly why it no longer stands out. what nobody else can make is you, answering an honest question about your own product, straight to camera.

the ad clips on underway's own homepage were made this way: a founder answering one question at a time in an episode, each answer cut on its own. ad answers is that, done for you, every month.

how the questions are written

underway reads what it already knows about your series: what you are building, who it is for, the background you gave it. then it writes six to eight questions, each on a different angle.

  • why you built it: the moment or the frustration that started it
  • who it is for, as a person in a situation, not a market
  • what those people do instead today, and what that costs them
  • the objection you hear most, and your honest answer
  • the first time it worked, for you or someone else
  • what someone actually does when they use it
  • what you would say to someone who tried and gave up
  • where it stands now, said plainly

every question is written so the answer stands on its own, because the question will not be in the clip. it asks for what only you can say, never for a slogan or a feature list.

how a sitting goes

open account and choose ad answers. on the phone it is in settings.

press write my questions. each question is asked out loud, then the camera records. say it, press done, then keep this answer or answer it again, as many goes as you like. skip any you do not want. aim for twenty to thirty seconds.

each answer you keep is read, and the cleanest unbroken stretch of it is chosen: whole sentences, in order, no false start at the front and no trailing so yeah at the end. then it is cut as a portrait clip with your captions, in your brand, with the angle as a small label in the corner.

the clips appear under your clips as they are made, each with a download.

what they are not

they are not episodes. they never take an episode number, never count towards your streak, and never appear in your vault or on your page. the diary stays the diary.

they are not rewritten. if a clip has an um in the middle of a sentence you meant, it stays. if an answer does not work, answer it again.

who gets ad answers?

series and every plan above it, one set of questions a month.

can i use the clips as paid ads?

yes. they are your own words and your own face, and the file is yours to download and run wherever you like.

does it write the ad copy too?

not yet. the clip is the ad; the words you post with it are yours.

what if i do not like an answer?

answer it again before you keep it, or skip the question. once kept, a clip that failed to make can be made again from its page.

ad answers is part of series, with everything else on the pricing table. see the plans.
